Yesterday I was invited out on Michael Emery's boat Kirsty III for a spot of early season species hunting. Bait in the form of Mackie and Launce were no too difficult to obtain at the back of Douglas Head then off we went to the Paddle Wheel mark.
Not really a lot here apart from lots of Whiting, so after several drifts it was off to the 6 mile mark in search of Haddock plus whatever else may show up.
Michael got into the Haddock catching 5 to my zero on the drift, but the whiting certainly became a pest. At this point we decided to push further out to a mark 15 miles offshore and have a play out there.
This proved to be a great tactic for Michael as he did manage to catch the best fish of the day with this Haddock wieghing in at just over the 3lb mark.
The score at this point was 9-5 to Michael and with time running out I finally manage a double catch of a Dog Fish and this nice Cod which weighed in just over the 2.9lb mark which brought me to with-in 2 of Michael at 9-7.
However time had caught us up and we had to call it a day with Michael taking the 1st £1 of the season. The day saw a total of 10 species being caught in the form of , LAUNCE, MACKEREL,GREY GURNARD,HADDOCK, POUTING,POOR COD,CALLIG,DOG FISH,WHITING & COD.
My thanks to Michael for the day out much enjoyed and a good laugh.
