up and at for 5.30am , youngest son (taxi) to airport for my flight at 7 am to liverpool for a day of fishing with author Phil Simpson and skip Emery, who is over there for a week doing a spot of fishing.New brighton was our meeting point so when emmo picked me up off we went via Mc,D's for a coffee.Micheal said that phil had most of the gear on the boat already apart from the reels so when we phoned Phil to see why he was runninig late he said that he had to go back because he had forgotten our rods.
We finally got launched and off we set through the choppy waters round to what was refered to as the banks mark.crab baits waqs the order of the day wand so with a simple running rig four rods were cast out and the expectations begun. Fishing it has to be said is what it is and catching fish this day looked as if it was going to be hard. Another local boat called wimps was fishing about a mile away from us and over the radio said that they had not caught a single fish.
Fishing on my normal port side of the boat my rod was the 1st to bend into action and provided me with what turned out to be the largest thorny taken on the day.Phil had a couple of whiting on both his rods before catching a very small Bass.Emmo's rod at this stage only moved when he rebaited his hook which was quite often as the baits were very quickly washed out in this big tide.
My rod tip bent over again and i was hoping that this was going to be my 1st boat caught Bass ,but alas no it turned out to be a Cod of over 3lb, "you don't catch Cod out here" was the retorts from the other two. I have to say that while all this had being going on my host for the day have cooked some supherb sauseges and smoked bacon baps which all got washed down with a piping hot cup of tea, Marvelous.
The fishing was very slow and both Micheal and Phil said they head never known these marks fish so poorly. With the pool of the day being what else but heavist Bass the beaming smile on Emmos face as he caught a Bass (his only fish of the entire dayi might add), i thought he was going to do a lap of honour round the boat,so about an hour or so later when i caught a slightly larger one his day of only managing to catch one fish extiguished the fire in his belly and so the £ came home to me.
In between all this Phil caught a small Thorny and a Dab and on the last mark of the day i caught another Codling. The day although not really a good fishing one was well spent in some execlent company with the crac and comerardery associated with most fishermen. I would like to thank Phil for the invite and hope to see him again soon on the island or for another trip with him out on the mersey.boat back on trailer it was time for a pint or two before flying back to the island for a kip.
