MICHAEL AND EDWINS TRIP TO MEXICO REPORT

With the winter weather of the Isle of Man being safely left behind, ex World Marlin Champion Edwin Jones and top Manx boat angler Michael Emery set off for a little sun and adventure on the waters off Cancun, Mexico. On arrival the first couple of days
Were spent sampling the local produce and tequila in moderate doses?

The fishing trips had been pre-booked with Aqua world of Cancun with Skipper Capt Orlando and his crew of two, Alan and Johsue. This was the same crew that I had in 2011. This skipper is about the fishing as he himself fishes the Marlin competitions later in the season.

Day one was all about breaking ducks and Michael Emery, who had never caught a bill fish in several attempts out in the waters of Mexico would not be disappointed on this occasion. There was an early morning start to day 1 and having caught some bait fish to help with the proceedings it was then up to the skipper to put the boys on the fish, and on the fish he did.

Several miles offshore the fish were clearly visible breaking the surface of the water, and it was not long before Michael was into his first Bill- Fish. The fishing was awesome and the fish just kept on coming, during the course of the session 30 fish were hooked with 25 of them landed on the boat. There was quite a range in the size of the sailfish but at the important end the largest of the day was weighed at 105lbs and was caught by Edwin.

Day two was a different kind of fishing with the skipper taking the lads 45 miles offshore to a massive underwater island with huge drop offs that produce a whole range of bottom feeding fish. The most predominant fish out here are the Amber Jacks, which can top the 100lb mark, although on this occasion the largest fell to Edwin and weighed in at 45lb.
The range of fish out on this mark is vast with Grouper and Mutton Fish taken over the 25lb mark. Other species taken were Horse Eyed Grouper and Trigger Fish.

The third days fishing was a combined affair with going after Sailfish in the first part of the day with renewed success with Michael getting his personal best of a Sailfish at 84lbs. Going off later in the day to another great reef mark Capt Orlando put the boys onto some more great bottom fishing with the star of the show being a African Pamplona fish of 35lbs being caught by Edwin, the first one of these that he has ever caught. There was also another first with Michael catching his first Mutton Fish. The only disappointment of the first three days was that the boat ran out of booze on all three days, this was something that was to be addressed back at port.

This being the Gulf of Mexico anyone having been will know that it can blow up hard here and with that in mind days 4 &5 were unfortunately blown off with safety being the main factor.

Day six however was a glorious day and was again going to be a mixed day of fishing with going after Sailfish in the morning and then onto another fishing mark that had the promise of some larger Amber Jacks. Capt Orlando steamed out to the fishing grounds having first stopped to let the boys catch the bait- fish for later in the day. A forty five- gallon barrel with an air pump ensures that your bait is alive and well until it is needed.

Sailfish at this time of year are not hard to find and both Michael and Edwin were catching them up to the 94lb mark. In between the Sailfish some Benito’s were caught with the largest at around the 15lb mark. The last part of the day produced lots of fish with Edwin getting a Mutton Fish of his own with Snapper and Grouper coming to the boat tipping the scales at 30lb plus. The big Amber Jacks that were expected at this final mark were not forth coming with the best one of the day topping the scales at just over the 40lb mark.

The end of the day meant that yet another fun filled trip was over with both Edwin and Michael very happy with Capt Orlando and his ever hardworking crew making sure that you were always doing what you had paid for, Fishing.

The big game fishing is plentiful in the clear waters off Cancun and the skippers are some of the most experienced in these legendry seas. Most have over twenty years experience and you will love the 34ft fishing boats with powerful turbo diesel engines. All boats are equipped with Penn International Rods and Reels, and your price includes all beer and soft drinks, your fishing license, bait and tackle. If you wish they do have Trophy mounting available.

You can hire the boats for yourself with a friend or two, or you can just be part of a fishing party on a 6 or 8 hr charter. Some cracking pics there lads, how much was a day out then?

I've been told by them both £400, not bad for a full day afloat catching great fish.
